Exam season for university students is both dreaded and inevitable, but with the right mindset and strategies, you can tackle it with ease. As a Postgraduate student in Global Human Resource Management at Newcastle University Business School, I've learned a few tricks to stay organised and maintain balance during this critical period. Whether you're considering joining this course or already navigating through it, here are some insights to help you navigate exam season with confidence.
Study Methods
The exam period for my programme is mainly coursework-based, with only one in-person exam in the year. However, our assessment methods include a range of formats including essays, reports, case studies, group assignments, and presentations. This variety keeps things interesting but also requires a tailored approach to studying.
I’ve found that adapting my study methods based on the type of assessment is key. For exams, I dedicate time to condensing the course material into detailed notes, starting with a review of lecture slides, textbooks, and recommended articles. Summarising key concepts, definitions, and important information creates a comprehensive study guide that I can refer to in the days leading up to the exam.
When tackling essays or reports, I focus on researching the subjects thoroughly by utilising a variety of academic sources which allow me to understand different perspectives and arguments related to the topic. To organise my written assignments, I create an outline with main points and supporting evidence acting as a roadmap for my writing process.
Group assessments require collaboration and coordination, so regular meetings with my teammates are vital for discussing key concepts, sharing insights and dividing tasks efficiently. Apart from in-person meetings, we also use digital tools for collaboration, such as Microsoft Teams, which allows us to work on the assignment together even outside of scheduled meetings.
Staying Organised
Maintaining organisation during the exam season is essential for success. One of the most valuable things for me is effective time management. I rely on Google Calendar to keep track of all my deadlines. Whether I’m on my laptop or out and about with my phone, I can easily check my calendar to stay on top of my upcoming tasks.
For study sessions, I stay organised by creating to-do lists. Breaking down larger tasks into manageable chunks not only makes studying more approachable but also helps me track progress and keeps me motivated. Apps like Forest or Pomodoro are my go-to tools for staying focused during study sessions. Forest grows a virtual tree as you study which helps me avoid distractions from my phone and social media. The Pomodoro Technique, with its 25-minute focused work intervals followed by short breaks, helps me maintain concentration and prevents burnout.
Study Spaces on Campus and in Town
Newcastle University offers fantastic study spaces within the campus, including the libraries and the Business School, which are perfect for productive study sessions. The Philip Robinson Library stands out as a favourite among many students, myself included. The library is accessible 24/7 and offers private study rooms that can be easily booked through the University Library website, which I often utilise as they provide a distraction-free environment, perfect for focused studying.
For group assignments or study sessions with my course mates, I tend to choose The Hub in the Business School or the Frederick Douglass Centre, which are designed for collaboration, providing a space for group discussions without the worry of disrupting others. While the university provides excellent study spaces, sometimes a change of scenery can be refreshing.
When I feel the need for a fresh perspective, I often head to the nearby cafes in Newcastle city centre for a different atmosphere, which can work wonders for productivity.
By utilising different types of studying methods, effective time management, and making the most of the study spaces on and off-campus, you can stay organised, face the exams season with confidence and excel in your studies. Remember, this period is a challenge but also an opportunity for growth and learning. Wishing you all the best in your exam season!
